General Questions

What is mediation?

Mediation is a calm, structured process where a neutral professional helps you and your former partner resolve disagreements. It's about finding practical solutions for the future rather than dwelling on the past, helping you move forward with clarity and dignity.

How is it different from going to court?

Unlike court where a judge makes decisions for your family, mediation keeps you in control. It's less adversarial, significantly faster, and much more cost-effective. We focus on cooperation, helping both parties feel heard and reach fair, private agreements.

Is mediation confidential?

Yes. Everything discussed in mediation is confidential (with very few legal exceptions regarding safety). This privacy allows both sides to speak openly and explore creative options without the fear that their words will be used against them in court later.

Do I need a lawyer to use mediation?

You don't need a lawyer to start mediation, though it is often helpful to have legal advice alongside the process. Mediation can help you reach a settlement that your solicitor can then draft into a legally binding order, saving time and legal fees.

Who is PK Mediation for?

We are here for any family or couple going through separation or conflict who wants a respectful path forward. Whether you're navigating child arrangements, financial division, or simply need a neutral space to communicate, we support you in keeping the focus on your future.

Family Mediation

What kinds of issues can family mediation help with?

Family mediation is a gentle way to resolve almost any practical concern following a separation. We commonly help with arrangements for children, how to share finances fairly, and decisions regarding the family home, all while keeping the process calm and focused on your future.

How many sessions will we need?

Every journey is unique. On average, families find that 3 to 5 sessions allow enough time to talk through things thoroughly and reach a clear agreement. We move at a pace that feels right for you, ensuring everyone feels heard and supported.

Do we have to be in the same room?

Your comfort is our priority. While joint sessions are often very productive, we also offer ‘shuttle mediation’ where you stay in separate spaces (online or in person). I will act as a bridge between you, ensuring a safe and productive conversation.

What if we don’t agree?

Mediation is a process of exploration. If a full agreement isn’t reached, the progress we make can still help simplify things later. You remain in control of the outcome, and I am here to support you in finding the best path forward for your family.

Child Arrangements

How does mediation support child arrangements?

Mediation provides a calm and structured environment for parents to focus on their children's wellbeing. We help you create practical schedules and communication plans that prioritise stability, ensuring both parents remain actively involved and supported.

Will my children be involved in mediation?

In some circumstances, older children can share their thoughts with a specialist practitioner through Child Inclusive Mediation. This gives them a gentle voice in the process without placing them in the position of having to choose between parents.

What if we disagree about contact or living arrangements?

It is perfectly normal for parents to have different views. My role is to help you explore these disagreements calmly, looking for practical middle ground that works for everyone. We focus on finding solutions that are sustainable and child-centred.

MIAM

What is a MIAM?

A MIAM is a short, private meeting between you and a mediator. It stands for Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting. It’s an opportunity to explore whether mediation is the right path for your family and to explain the process in a calm, neutral environment.

Do I have to attend a MIAM before going to court?

In most cases, the court requires you to have attended a MIAM before you can apply for a legal order regarding children or finances. It ensures you have considered mediation as a constructive way to resolve your situation without court intervention.

What happens in a MIAM?

I will listen to your concerns and explain the benefits and costs of mediation. We will talk about your goals and any worries you may have. It is a supportive space designed to give you clarity on your options and help you decide your next steps.

The Process

What are the steps from first contact to agreement?

Our journey begins with a private initial consultation (MIAM), followed by individual meetings where we explore your specific concerns. We then move into joint mediation sessions. These sessions provide a calm, structured environment where you can both work together towards a fair, mutually agreeable outcome.

What happens once an agreement is reached?

Once you reach a consensus, we will prepare a formal summary of your proposals, often referred to as a Memorandum of Understanding. This document outlines the practical steps and decisions you have agreed upon, providing a clear roadmap for your next steps with confidence and clarity.

How do I begin the process with PK Mediation?

Starting the process is straightforward and gentle. Simply reach out to us by phone or through our contact form. We will listen to your current situation and explain the next steps clearly, helping you to arrange your initial consultation at a time that works for you.
